A significant step forward was made in the implementation of the “Science and Technology-based Interventions for Sustainable Tourism in Batanes” project as the Uyugan Council of Elders, representing the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) community of Uyugan, Batanes, granted their consent to proceed during a coordination meeting with the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) today, November 21, 2024, at the Municipal Hall, Uyugan, Batanes.

Prior to this meeting, the project team, alongside representatives from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) and the Uyugan Council of Elders, visited Mutchong, Uyugan, where the project is proposed to be developed.

The project team, through Djovi R. Durante, SUC President I, presented the proposed project to the Uyugan Council of Elders. The discussion resulted in a smooth consent process with minimal feedback, which is essential for obtaining a Certification Precondition (CP) from the NCIP. This certification is a crucial document ensuring that the project honors Indigenous rights and cultural heritage.

To further elaborate on the project’s potential impact, presentations were made to local government unit (LGU) officials in Uyugan during an afternoon coordination meeting. The following studies were presented:
Study 1: Science and Technology-based Design of Infrastructure in Tourism Sites
Study 2: Community-based Design and Pilot Demonstration of AGRF (filter)
Study 3: Deployment of Ivatan Electric Cogon Trike, GPS-based for tracking and booking app
Study 4: ICT-based Platform for Tourism
Study 5: Sustainable Livelihood with Science and Technology Interventions

These studies are designed to provide significant benefits to the local community and the environment.

With the consent secured from both the Council of Elders and the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) officials, the project team is now poised to advance the implementation of the project that will have a positive impact on both the local community and the environment.
