On September 19, 2025, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at Sitio Mutchung, Kayvaluganan, Uyugan, Batanes for two (2) studies under the research project “Science and Technology-Based Interventions for Sustainable Tourism in Batanes.” The project, implemented by Batanes State College (BSC) and funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), began on November 4, 2024 and will run until November 3, 2026.
The studies breaking ground include the Modern Ivatan House Compound and the Artificial Groundwater Recharge Facility (AGRF)—both designed to support sustainable tourism while preserving local heritage and addressing resource challenges in the province.
Present during the ceremony were members of the local government unit of Uyugan led by Vice Mayor Hon. Felix Adami, representatives from DOST-PCIEERD, Ms. Alissandra Pauline B. Mariano, Senior Science Research Specialist, and Engr. Christian Alec S. Managa, Project Technical Specialist III, along with the BSC project team headed by Project Leader and College President, Djovi R. Durante.
This groundbreaking marks a significant step toward integrating science, technology, and community engagement in shaping the future of sustainable tourism in Batanes.
