On February 24, 2026, representatives from Batanes State College (BSC) participated in the Summit and Workshop on Laji, initiated by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), held at the National Museum of the Philippines – Batanes Division in Imnajbu, Uyugan, Batanes.

The BSC delegation was composed of Jose Emanuel T. Castillejos, Administrative Aide VI, together with two second-year students: Maybelyn Alueta (Bachelor of Secondary Education – Science major); and Roxie Mae Villarta (Bachelor of Science in Information Technology).

The summit aimed to promote the preservation and continuity of Laji, one of the most treasured intangible cultural traditions of the Ivatan people. Known for its poetic structure, creative composition, and emotional depth, Laji embodies the artistry, history, and identity of the Ivatan community. The gathering highlighted the urgent need to safeguard this oral tradition so that future generations may remain deeply connected to the cultural foundations of Batanes.

The program featured lectures and insights from distinguished Ivatan cultural advocates, including:

  • Hon. Vicenta C. Hidalgo, Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative;
  • Ms. Josefa Cobaria, renowned Ivatan choral master:
  • Hon. Anastacia B. Viola, Chairman of the Board of Culture and Education, Sangguniang Panlalawigan;
  • Mr. Dorian Merina, author, journalist, and Senior Lecturer at UP Diliman; and
  • Prof. Edwin Winston Valientes, Assistant Professor at UP Diliman.

BSC’s active participation underscores the College’s enduring commitment to cultural preservation and its vital role in ensuring that Ivatan heritage continues to inform academic excellence and community development.
