On November 8, Batanes State College and DOST-PCAARRD paid a courtesy call to Hon. Pedro Poncio, Municipal Mayor of Mahatao to discuss the ongoing R&D project on native pig breeding in Batanes.
DOST-PCAARRD Livestock Research Division Director, Dr. Synan S. Baguio expressed his gratitude to the mayor for his support to the project especially on the provision of land area for the native pig breeding herd. He also discussed that R&D on native pig breeding is geared towards enhancing the potentials of the said animal as a source of livelihood, raw materials for the production of pork-based ethnic delicacies, and of genetic materials to respond to changing consumer demands and to climate change.
Meanwhile, Mayor Poncio thanked DOST- PCAARRD and BSC for establishing the project to his municipality that will surely benefit the farmers, entrepreneurs, and the whole community.
The group also had an earlier meeting with Dr. Janie Cipriano, Veterinarian 2 of the Provincial Veterinary Office regarding pig production system in the province.
The project titled “Establishment of Native Pig Breeding Herd in Batanes” is a three-year research funded by DOST-PCAARRD and implemented by BSC.
