Batanes State College (BSC), under the direction of the College President, Dr. Djovi R. Durante, joins the province in celebrating the Vunung Festival and the 243rd Foundation Day of Batanes today, 26 June 2026.
The celebration began with a solemn Holy Mass at the Aquino Grandstand, where BSC faculty and staff, together with representatives from various government agencies, organizations, and members of the Ivatan community, gathered in thanksgiving for God’s abundant blessings upon the province and its people.
The festivities continued with a vibrant Cultural Parade, where participants proudly donned their Ivatan attire, showcasing the rich heritage, unique traditions, and enduring cultural identity of Batanes. The colorful parade served as a beautiful reminder of the province’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its cultural legacy.
The day officially commenced with the Grand Opening Program, hosted by the Provincial Government of Batanes, marking the formal opening of the Vunung Festival 2026.
A highlight of the celebration was the sharing of Vunung, lovingly prepared by the province’s six (6) municipalities as a community luncheon for all community members including visitors. An enduring Ivatan tradition, Vunung features food carefully wrapped in kabaya leaves, symbolizing unity, generosity, and gratitude. More than a shared meal, it reflects the Ivatan spirit of community and hospitality, strengthening bonds while preserving a cherished cultural practice for future generations.
As Batanes celebrates another milestone, may the values of unity, resilience, faith, and cultural pride continue to inspire every Ivatan.
Happy 243rd Foundation Day, Batanes!
