Batanes State College (BSC) led by College President, Dr. Djovi R. Durante and staff attended the Inauguration and Turnover Ceremony of the Modern Resilient Ivatan House on December 06, 2025, at Sitio Muchong, Uyugan, Batanes.
It was labeled as the house where “Science meets tradition”. This project is designed to preserve the traditional construction methods of houses in Batanes while integrating modern engineering techniques to ensure resilience against strong typhoons and other natural calamities.
The project was initiated by the Cagayan State University – Aparri (CSU-Aparri) research team, led by Dr. Audy Quebral and supported by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).
Attended by the Executive Director of DOST-PCIEERD Dr. Enrico Paringit; Dr. Audy Quebral, Chief Executive Officer of CSU-Aparri; Hon. James Richard Cabugao, Mayor of Uyugan; Mr. Tomas Ibardo, Atty. Sigfred Ray Valdez, and Ms. Christine Battuing of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples – Batanes; and other key officials bore witness to this significant event.
This marks the construction of the first Modern Resilient Ivatan House in the area, with additional houses to follow, including the one currently being built by BSC. Soon, this place will become a village that highlights the unique Ivatan Houses. The village that will showcase how modern science and technology can enhance the community’s heritage, while welcoming tourists in a way that preserved its authentic culture.
