Batanes, Philippines – Batanes State College (BSC) celebrated a momentous occasion on April 16, 2024, with the inauguration of its brand new, three-story Academic Management Building. This marks a significant step forward for the institution, symbolizing its commitment to providing exceptional quality services for its students, community, and stakeholders.

The ceremony commenced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by the symbolic planting of an Arius tree, native to Batanes. Dr. Djovi R. Durante, BSC’s president, led the festivities alongside esteemed guests: Dr. Marita Rana-Canapi, Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED); Hon. Ciriaco Gato Jr., Congressman for Lone District of Batanes; and Hon. Justinne Jerico Socito, Provincial Administrator, who represented the Governor, Hon. Marilou H. Cayco.

Dr. Durante envisioned the new building as a “one-stop shop” for students. The ground floor will offer convenient access to essential services like guidance counseling, a clinic, the registrar’s office, and other student support services.

Highlighting the building’s significance, Dr. Durante stated, “The inauguration aligns perfectly with BSC’s vision and mission to expand and enhance its educational offerings. These new facilities cater to the college’s growing needs, including non-office spaces. This achievement benefits not only faculty and staff but especially our students who will experience improved services.” He also acknowledged the crucial role of Engr. Alfonso “Cholo” Simon, the previous college president, in bringing the Academic Management Building to fruition.

Looking ahead, BSC plans to showcase its modernized building further. Dr. Durante emphasized ongoing efforts to secure funding from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and Congressman Gato. A proposal for a budget of 245 million pesos has been submitted to improve existing buildings, construct additional classrooms, and maximize resources through vertical expansion due to limited land for horizontal expansion.

Hon. Justinne Jerico Socito acknowledged the success of the college as a triumph for the entire province. He expressed his hope that the beautiful offices within the new building would radiate a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. The office of the governor pledged continued support to Batanes State College in the years to come.

Cong. Gato, in his speech, emphasized the importance of education, stating, “While some may say education isn’t necessary for a good life, I disagree. Education equips you with the tools to overcome challenges and create a brighter future.” He stressed that education is the great equalizer and urged students to seize the opportunity to learn.

Dr. Canapi, who recently returned after nine years to the province, shared that the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) remains committed to promoting both access and quality education. She highlighted their support for colleges in internationalization efforts and emphasized that a university’s greatness is measured by the achievements of its alumni.

The inauguration and blessing of the Academic Management Building mark a historic milestone for Batanes State College. With its modern facilities and unwavering dedication to education, BSC paves the way for a brighter future for its students and the entire academic community.
