BSC faculty-researchers have undertaken value-adding activities on the uhangu fruit at the Cagayan State University Food Innovation Center, Tuguegarao City on July 17-18,2023.
The uhangu, also known as sea pandan, is a tree commonly found along the shorelines of Batanes. The fruit is often eaten by the coconut crab or tatus.
Among the products developed were uhangu juice and candy which were submitted for laboratory testing to determine the nutritional composition and ensure their safety for consumption.
The uhango fruit research is an institutionally-funded research of HTM, Agriculture and Teacher Education departments, approved by the RDET Council.
FIC Focal Person and PSTO-Batanes Provincial director Ms. Nora T. Garcia provided technical assistance to BSC faculty-researchers namely Ms. Daryl Alva B.Duguran, Ms. Ma.Niam Karla P. Delos Santos, Ms. Gloria N. Cabizon and Ms. Jane S. Castillo.
