ANOTHER FEATHER IS added to the cap of Batanes State College (BSC), as it recorded its first faculty author this academic year. Mr. Ferdinand Bulusan, Assistant Professor III of the Teacher Education Department, launched his first book titled “Campus Journalism within your Reach” last September 9 at Mahatao Elementary School.

Bulusan’s nationally circulated book was officially launched during the opening ceremonies of the Division Schools Press Conference attended by almost 700 student-journalists and school paper advisers in the entire province of Batanes. Sponsored by the Department of Education – Batanes, the launching was graced by the then Superintendent of the Schools Division Office, Madam Wivina Gonzales, and the BSC President, Dr. Edwin F. Macaballug.

“You can be the torch to give light to the truth,” Gonzales said during her speech. Dr. Macaballug mentioned, too, that Bulusan’s footpaths being a young author would serve as inspirations to his fellow faculty members. Also present in the event were the key officials of DepEd Batanes and BSC. Highlighting the launching ceremonies was the opening of the veil to the public.

About the book

During the launching, Bulusan, a 24-year old English faculty, explained that the book is actually a worktext, which offers comprehensive discussion of the topics in campus journalism and provides numerous outcomes-based activities for the learners. He also added that the book is an offshoot of his experiences as journalist for quite a time, editor in various locally-circulated newspapers, adviser of the school papers, lecturer-judge, and trainer in various press conferences.

The book, according to Bulusan, is primarily intended for tertiary students who are taking such subject and for secondary students who may wish to hone their journalistic writing skills. Copies of the book are sold in all National Bookstore branches in the Philippines.

Inspiring young journos

“Everyone can write, but few can do it right,” Bulusan, who is also currently designated as the Planning Officer of the College, emphasized this statement during his speech. Bulusan is still looking forward to help more would-be journalists through his book.

During his inspirational speech, he said, “There are no shortcuts to success, no elevators to success, and no Escalators to success.” For those who attended the event and bought his book, Bulusan personally signed their own copies and wrote personal messages for them.
